Shakespeare's Twelfth Night

Leviathan Lab is proud to present Shakespeare’s classic romantic comedy TWELFTH NIGHT as our inaugural production. TWELFTH NIGHT features an all Asian cast starring Tina Chilip as Viola, a refugee who finds herself shipwrecked on the mysterious island of Illyria. She falls in love with the Duke Orsino (Kurt Uy), who is in love with the Countess Olivia (Eileen Rivera).  Hilarity ensues, fueled by hijinks provided by her clown, Feste (Jojo Gonzalez), Sir Toby (Jon Roque), Sir Andrew (Marcus Ho), and Malvolio (Andrew Eisenman). Also featured are Chris Doi as Sebastian, Viola's long-lost brother, his pirate companion, Antonio (Eugene Oh). This powerhouse cast also includes Ka-ling Cheung and Karen Lee sharing the role of Maria, as well as Roger Yeh as Valentine/Fabian.

TWELFTH NIGHT will be directed by artistic director Nelson T. Eusebio III, featuring original music by veteran Broadway actor/composer Jason Ma (BROADWAY: MISS SAIGON, SHOGUN THE MUSICAL, SLY FOX). Sets and costumes will be designed Maiko Chii, lights by Melissa Mizell, and sound by Sam Kusnetz. Natalie Zhang is the Stage Manager.

TWELFTH NIGHT is being produced by Ariel Estrada, Ben Bartolone, and Dorim Lee.

Thank you!

Dear Friends,

This year, I got the best birthday gift ever. In less than 5 days, hundreds of friends like you donated to Leviathan Lab and surpassed my goal of $2,069. What's even more astonishing is to see that in less than two weeks Leviathan supporters topped that and raised $3,143 to ensure that our inaugural production - Twelfth Night - will be a success.

Thank you for believing in Leviathan's mission. We couldn't have done this with out you.

With gratitude and love,
Ariel

A letter from May Nazareno
The world feels like it’s collapsing around me each time I read the headlines, but I find inspiration when I think of the members of Leviathan Lab. What makes this grassroots theatre company so special is that it’s truly an organization with a lot of heart. “I created this theatre company with my own money so that emerging Asian American artists could have a chance to get recognized for their talent. No one else was doing that in New York, and I never had that when I first started out. I decided to make that road easier.” I remember Ariel Estrada, the founder of Leviathan Lab, telling me this the first time we met at a Starbucks and I was deeply moved. As you know, the theatre is incredibly cut-throat, which fundamentally requires a support base where artists who are just starting out can gain confidence in her talent, and the maturity to make the right decisions. So much of that support begins with families who believe that pursing the arts is the right thing.

But what about the rest those who don’t have that kind of support? Where do they find the mentors? Where do they gain the insights to best navigate the industry?

Leviathan was created in response to those needs. In the last two years they have made great strides in forming a membership of both emerging artists and professionals who together push the boundaries of Asian American performance. I have personally been impressed with what Leviathan has accomplished since April of this year:
  • Leviathan formed the Asian American Women Writers Workshop, a play-writing lab dedicated to nurturing new works.
  • Leviathan mounted a series of Shakespeare plays, which enabled emerging actors to work alongside professional actors and directors to create engaging ensemble based performances of: As You Like It, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, and Othello.
  • Leviathan served as co-producers for Gated which premiered at the Midtown International Theater Festival, and Women of TU-NA House, which is part of this year’s New York Fringe Festival.
And this November, Leviathan will make its own mark by teaming with some of the best Asian American theatre artists in New York to create Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Already, a number of artists on the production have chosen to donate their stipends to ensure that Leviathan can get the resources they need to make this production the highest caliber possible.

Its news like this that makes me realize that there is such a thing called community – and that we can rely on the community to hold us up and make a positive impact. I am very proud to be part of this collective of artists and hope you will join me in strengthening this organization with whatever you can give to make sure Leviathan can be a success. Thanks for reading this, and most importantly – thank you for believing that each one of us can truly make a difference.

In solidarity,

Proud Leviathan Member

A Birthday Wish from Ariel Estrada
Dear friends and fans of Leviathan Lab,

Next week, I’m going to celebrate my birthday and I realized what I wanted most of all this year was to make sure that Leviathan’s programs bring this organization to the next level. We have come a long way since January 2009, and we have worked so hard to make Leviathan a success. Now is the time to take great leaps and create impact.

On Monday, Leviathan is launching our fall online fundraising campaign. We will be letting our friends, family and colleagues both via email and Facebook to give a minimum of $10 toward our first milestone of $2,069 (the 69 is for my birthday year!) by Saturday, August 20th. With your help, I have faith that we can make this happen.

I am so grateful to you for all that you have done for Leviathan. I know that without your time or your talent, Leviathan would not be where it is today. Right now, Leviathan is a critical stage in its development, which is why I need you to stand with me and promise to make a gift of at least $10 today. Can you do that much? And can you get at least two of your friends and loved ones to give $10 as well?

That’s all it takes to reach our first milestone: you and two other people who can support the critical work we do.

I know we can do this by August 20th, if not sooner!

Your efforts would mean a lot to me personally, and it would be so inspiring if we could kick start Monday with big numbers and strong supporters who want to see Leviathan thrive. You can make a tax-deductible, secure online donation through our fiscal sponsor Fractured Atlas by clicking here, or by pasting this address into your browser: https://www.fracturedatlas.org/site/fiscal/profile?id=4802

Thank you so much for everything that you have done for Leviathan, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

With appreciation and gratitude,
Ariel Estrada
